| This addition and remodeling project to Monroe Center Elementary was the end result of a Facilities Study that was completed for all four of the Districts buildings. The study, based on the Districts enrollment projections, reviewed overall building usage to derive optimal performance for the next ten years. The project was made possible by a bond referendum passed in March 2000 for $10.5 Million. Additional funding totaling $3.7 Million was received from the school construction grant funds from the Capital Development Board (see detailed funding on page 4). Construction began in Fall 2000 to build twelve new Classrooms and a new Gymnasium/Cafeteria with an adjoining Kitchen at the Monroe Center School. The school was completed in August 2001.
The addition at Meridian Junior High started in late Fall 2000 and is scheduled for completion in December 2001. The addition at Stillman Valley High School broke ground in Spring 2001 and is scheduled for completion in May 2002. The Highland Elementary addition is scheduled to begin in Spring 2002. This 27,450-square foot addition doubles the size of the existing facility. The capacity of the new Gymnasium/Cafeteria has more than doubled. The existing kitchen was operating with equipment that did not meet the needs of the size of the elementary school. The glass vestibules that adjoin the existing and new makes the transition between buildings as seamless as possible. This circular school footprint alleviates congestion in the hall and improves circulation. The safe, enclosed courtyard provides additional education space for science curriculum. Terrazzo flooring is in the new east side entrance and continues down the corridor leading to the gym. The light provided by two skylights and art gallery lighting provide an ideal display wall at this entrance. As part of the remodeling package, the existing kitchen, boiler room and a classroom were transformed into a workroom, art room and storage areas. |
