In 1995 Scales Mound Community Unit School District 211 hired our firm to do a Pre-Referendum Study. Their district, with an average population of 300, functioned within one PreK-12 building which had gone through multiple generations of additions. Our planning sessions with their staff and other representatives revealed some major concerns and needs:

• keep elementary and high school students and their class areas separate;

• replace an ineffectual science lab with up-to-date demonstration, computer, & experiment areas capable of adapting to progressive educational changes;

• a larger, more compre-hensive tech ed class;

• a contest gym with adequate spectator seating and ample boys, girls, visiting, and home team lockerrooms;

• a new band room, properly located & treated for the least sound transmission

• a larger administrative area;

• devise adequate ventilation, especially for the art room and original spaces “boxed in” by subsequent additions.

After a successful referendum, we designed a 2-level 37,857 s.f. addition to complement 12,000 s.f. of remodeling. This increased the school’s area by 80% and included new classrooms, Science, Music, and Tech Ed rooms, and a new Gym, Lockerrooms and Chair Lift. Renovations updated the Library, Administrative areas, Art, Preschool rooms, and renovated both the toilet rooms and classrooms to meet accessibility requirements.
